about

Composer's Notes:
William de Warenne (see track 2 notes) instigated the building of St Michael's Church, Newhaven. Although the church was built in 1120, and William de Warenne died in 1088, he had given four acres and one or two mills for the building of a church in 1081, before he died. The Priory, in nearby Lewes, was started in 1082 on his instructions, and it is probable the building of St Michael's church in Newhaven (then known as Meechynge) had to wait until the priory was well on the way before construction could begin. The stone in church and priory are the same and the architects/builders were likely to be the same. (Thanks to Martyn Edwards for this research).
This track is in a plainsong style, befitting the 12th century. You'll notice the building work noises, that are random as the building starts but become proper and ordered as the church is finished. Birdsong and rain are both constants, and would have been heard and felt 900 years ago, as well as today. There's a link from then until now!

lyrics

About this time was William de Warenne
With his good lady wife Gundrada
The owners of the settlement
The name of which was Meechynge
Decided in that place to build a dedicated chamber
to offer up their prayers unto their Lord.
Amen.
